Switching Inner Levers

What we learned from Awaken the Giant Within about diagnosing whether the next useful change belongs in state, story, or strategy instead of changing everything at once.

Switching Inner Levers

The book’s strongest practical idea is that change becomes easier when we stop treating every disappointing result as one giant personal problem.

What we learned

A useful diagnostic is to separate three levers:

  • State: what condition am I in while trying to do this?
  • Story: what interpretation or belief is shaping the attempt?
  • Strategy: what method, sequence, skill, or resource am I using?

Those levers are different. A strategy problem does not always need more motivation, and a bad day does not always mean the whole plan is wrong.

The tension underneath the idea

Self-improvement advice often over-personalises outcomes. When something fails, we can blame identity, mindset, or willpower even when the real issue is timing, skill, process, resources, or external constraints.

The value of the three-lever model is that it slows that overreaction down.

What changes when we apply it carefully

When a result disappoints, ask:

  • Was my state making good execution harder?
  • Was I telling a story that reduced useful action?
  • Was the strategy itself weak or incomplete?
  • What external factor mattered?
  • Which single variable is worth changing next?

What we would not turn into a rule

No personal-change framework explains every result. Markets, health, relationships, access, timing, randomness, power differences, and structural conditions can all matter.

From Growth to Journal

The paired Journal turns the diagnosis into a feedback loop. Instead of asking “What is wrong with me?”, From Causes to Outcomes asks which inputs were actually connected to the result and what one or two variables are worth adjusting next.
