Checking Whether Life Is Working

Checking Whether Life Is Working

The paired Growth from I Will Teach You To Be Rich argues for automating routine money decisions and reviewing them deliberately. That raises a broader question: how often does a useful review need to happen before it becomes repetitive checking?

Checking can feel productive without changing anything

Looking at an account balance, portfolio, metric, inbox, or progress tracker can create a brief feeling of control. But if nothing has changed and no decision follows, the check may not be producing useful information.

What this reflection explores

The practical question is: what deserves regular review, and what does not need to be graded every day?

  • What am I actually trying to improve?
  • What information would change a decision?
  • How often can that information reasonably change?
  • Is this check leading to action, or only to another check?
  • When is the next scheduled review?

Money makes the pattern easy to see

A budget or automated transfer may need periodic review. It rarely needs emotional renegotiation every few hours.

The same principle can apply elsewhere: set a sensible review rhythm, define what would trigger an exception, and let the system operate between reviews.

Do not turn measurement into identity

Another risk is allowing a number to become a verdict: account balance, productivity score, body metric, follower count, or career milestone. Useful measurement should inform a decision, not determine personal worth.

Uncertainty is not always a data problem

Sometimes there is simply no new information yet. Re-checking cannot manufacture certainty. The next useful move may be to continue, wait, or review at the agreed time.

The rule worth keeping

If the next check cannot change the next decision, it may not need to happen yet.

Authenticity gate

This remains editorial reflection. IAMRAIN will not label it “What I experienced” until genuine lived material is available.
